PhD in Chemistry – Catalytic Science at Cardiff University, Application deadline 31 August 2019

Start date October 2019
Duration 3 years
Level of study Postgraduate research
Award type PhD studentship
Number of studentships Two

Applications are invited for two PhD studentships in the Cardiff Catalysis Institute (CCI), for work in collaboration with the UK Catalysis Hub – a national network of catalytic science in the UK.

Several research projects will be available studying the molecular level properties controlling the performance of key catalytic systems. A wide range of techniques will be employed including synthesis, characterisation and testing of catalytic systems, but also, where appropriate, synchrotron and neutron based experimental methods (employing the UK Diamond synchrotron and ISIS neutron facilities), together with computer modelling.

Research topics will relate to the following catalytic systems:

  • supported nano-metallic catalysts used in a wide range of processes including oxidation, hydrogenation and C-H activation as well as photo-catalytic reactions
  • microporous catalysts employed in hydrocarbon synthesis, isomerisation and oxidation catalysis
  • metal oxide and carbide catalysts used in CO2ย activation.
